Sticker Shock: U.S. Used Car Prices Soar as Nation Tackles Weak Economy and More


Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later. U.S. used car prices are up 30% over June 2010, in some cases besting Kelly Blue Book values by as much as 25%. Trade-ins are also up by 30% since this time last year.

A variety of factors, including an economy still reeling from the Global Financial Crisis, high gas prices and the Tōhoku earthquake, are thought to be responsible for the massive price rise.

Ford Calls Rally Fans to Vote on Their Favorite Roof Livery for the Fiesta WRC


The Blue Oval’s rally team is reaching out to its fans through Facebook and asking them to choose a unique roof artwork the Fiesta RS WRCs driven by Jari-Matti Latvala, Mikko Hirvonen and Khalid Al Qassimi at next month’s Rally Finland, which runs from July 28-30, 2011.

“Up until now the Ford Abu Dhabi Team Fiesta RS WRCs have simply featured the Ford logo,” said Will May, Motorsport Marketing Manager for Ford of Europe. “So we’re inviting our Facebook followers to vote for one of several designs we’ve developed under one theme – which is ‘the food that fuels you’."

Ford Says No to 7-Seat Grand C-MAX for the USA, Yes to Hybrid 5-Seat C-MAX


Earlier today, we told you about Ford’s decision to increase production of the Focus-based C-MAX minivan at its Valencia plant in Spain to meet strong demand from European customers. We also noted that Ford was planning to launch the longer and more spacious 7-seat Grand C-MAX in the United States.

Well, it turns out there’s been a slight change of plans as the Detroit automaker just announced it won’t be bringing the petrol-powered Grand C-MAX to the U.S. after all. But not all is lost for fans of the Focus-based minivan as Ford will focus on the five-seat C-MAX in both hybrid and plug-in hybrid formats. The C-MAX Hybrid and C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid vehicles were previewed at the Detroit Auto Show this past January.

Ford Increases Production of C-MAX in Europe to Meet Growing Sales


Good news for Ford as the company has ramped up production of its new five-seat C-MAX and seven-seat Grand C-MAX to meet growing demand for the two minivans in the European market. U.S. Government Focusing in on Web Gadgets that Distract Drivers


We are all living in an age of networked information. Social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, smartphones and public internet access are making the world smaller every day. Unfortunately, in some instances all this information can distract us from the important things, such as focusing on driving. And no one agrees with this more than U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood:

And the Unluckiest Car in Britain is…the Honda FR-V


Well, the question and the answer have already been given to you in the title, so let us elaborate for a moment. A UK-based car insurance price comparison website called “Confused.com” conducted a study to find out which vehicle make and model had the highest accident rates in Britain in the last five years. The company notes that the statistics you’re about to read show only a snapshot of accident-related claims made by owners of a particular make and model of vehicle.

According to the results, the Honda FR-V, a compact 6-seater minivan marketed in Europe and Japan from 2004 to 2009, topped the list with 2,529 owners of the model making 466 accident claims in the past five years, which is equal to a claim rate of 18.4 per cent, or close to one in five.

‘Tis Official: Mazda to Stop Building the North American Mazda6 in the USA, Successor will Come from Japan


For better or for worse, depending on which side of the line you are standing on, Mazda has confirmed rumors that it will stop building the Mazda6 at the AutoAlliance International (AAI) plant in Michigan, which it runs jointly with Ford, after the mid-size sedan's current cycle ends.

The company said the Mazda6's replacement for the North American market will be produced at its Hofu Plant in Yamaguchi prefecture, Japan, adding that the decision was driven by the firm’s “ongoing efforts to increase global manufacturing efficiencies”.

Report: Mazda to Cut Ties with Ford and Stop U.S. Production by 2013


Earlier in May, we told you about a report concerning Mazda’s plans to discontinue production of its Mazda6 mid-size model at its joint-venture plant with Ford in Michigan. Today, new reports from both Japan and the U.S. are claiming that Mazda Motors will dissolve its 50-50 joint venture with Ford and stop building cars in the USA by 2013, with the Japanese company already in talks with the Detroit automaker to sell its stake in their car production venture Auto Alliance International [AAI]. Ford’s Smallest Production Engine Ever: The New 1.0-liter EcoBoost Three-Cylinder Gasoline Unit


It took the Ford Motor Company a very long time to jump aboard the turbocharged engine bandwagon for mainstream, non-sport models, but now the Detroit automaker is going full speed ahead with the presentation of a full range of force-fed gasoline powerplants. Ford latest offering is a new 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine, the company’s first three-cylinder unit and its smallest production engine ever.

Designed by the engineering team at Ford’s Dunton Technical Centre in the U.K., the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine promises to deliver performance of a larger four-cylinder unit with even higher fuel economy. It employs all EcoBoost technologies, such as turbocharging, direct injection and twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT).

Toyota Sales Plunge More than 33% in May, Chrysler Group up by 10%


The numbers for U.S. auto sales for the month of May are out and as expected, Japanese automakers continue to be hit hard by the ongoing production disruptions caused by the March 11 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster in their home market. As a result, Toyota’s sales plunged 33.4% over the year-ago month to 108,387 units, while rivaling Honda saw its sales fall 22.5% to 90,773 vehicles, Nissan recorded a 9.1% drop to 76,148 units and Mazda 17,875 vehicles, down 20.9%.

General Motors dealers in the United States delivered 221,192 vehicles in May posting a decline of 1%, while the Ford Motor Co. said its sales decreased by 0.1% to 192,253 cars, trucks and SUVs.

Big Brother is Watching, Well, All of us: U.S. DoT Seeks to Make Event Data Recorders Mandatory


Australian inventor and all-round genius Dr David Warren is widely considered to be the father of the “black box” Flight Data Recorder (FDR). His invention helped make flying safer by giving investigators valuable insights into the mechanical goings-on of a crashed aircraft. What may surprise you is that for the last twenty years similar devices have been installed in our cars.

Event Data Recorders (EDRs) are the automotive equivalent of an aircraft’s FDR. These devices record acceleration and deceleration forces, engine RPM, temperature, oil pressure and a host of other things. After a crash, the information can be recovered and studied, aiding investigators.

New Ford Fiesta Classic launched



With the all new Ford Fiesta just around the corner, Ford yesterday launched a cheaper variant of the current Fiesta, christened the Fiesta Classic, which will continue to be sold even once the new Fiesta is out next month.

The Fiesta Classic will address a much broader customer base with two new trims - LXI and CLXI. With this the Classic becomes more attractive and affordable with the petrol variants starting at Rs. 549,030 (ex-showroom, Delhi) and diesel variants at Rs. 648,000 (ex-showroom, Delhi).

The new Fiesta Classic retains its core characteristics of surefooted balance on the road, responsive steering and compliant suspension. Seekor Kuda Liar Yang Mempesona Ford Mustang Fastback GT500 "Eleanor" 1967



Sejujurnya, sebuah film yang dibintangi oleh Nicolas Cage berjudul "Gone in 60 Seconds", bukanlah pemenang dalam ajang pembuatan film Academy Award. Apa karena pembuatan film tersebut tidak bagus? Kisah ini akan dimulai, dan Anda yang memutuskan.

Bagaimanapun, satu hal yang kita yakini, adalah bahwa bintang terbesar dalam film tersebut bukanlah sang aktor pemeran utamanya, melainkan adalah seekor kuda liar yang mempesona, Mustang Fastback '67, yang bernama "Eleanor".

HB Halicki adalah seorang salesman mobil bekas yang ingin membuat sebuah film. Dengan sedikit uang, satu ide besar, dan Mustang Mach 1 1971, ia membuat Gone in 60 Seconds. Dan dalam cara tertentu, bahwa film-film, terutama film 70-an, bisa tidak semua yang baik, tapi itulah hal yang mengagumkan.

Kuncinya adalah sepotong, kecil datar terbuat dari logam. Dibandingkan dengan kunci-kunci yang ada hari ini, berbentuk benjolan dari plastik, terlihat kunci Eleanor seperti sesuatu yang akan membuka sebuah koper yang Anda jinjing. Hanya tombol-tombol di seluruh mobil berada di stereo.





Kunci kecil kemudi di slot pada gilirannya dipercikkan, dan melepaskan rentetan suara yang ribut. Pipa-pipa dual 2.5-inch berjalan melalui muffler Spintek dan keluar persis di belakang pintu-pintu hampir tidak mengandung ledakan pada mesin. Eleanor merupakan mobil tergampang paling keras yang pernah kita dorong - diperlukan setidaknya dua mobil alarm setiap kali kami mengeluarkannya.

Meskipun begitu keras kita praktis terhindar dari kuburan demi menghormati orang mati. Jadi ketika Anda menghidupkan stereo aktif, Anda pun bermain dengan gas sesering mungkin, untuk suara dan faktanya, bahwa 550 tenaga kuda di dalam mobil, kami telah membuat Mustang 1967 berjalan seperti di Niagara. Ford's best seller sedan, Ford Focus coming to India


Ford, world's third leading car manufacturer's are now all set to launch their so far best seller, Ford Focus in the ever growing Indian automobile field. The main thing to be noted with this new Ford Focus in India is that it looks almost similar with the Ford's one of the earlier hit model, Ford Ikon.

This new Ford Focus, a good looking sedan in the D segment will have to compete with the likes of Honda Civic, Skoda Octavia and Toyota Corolla Altis. The Focus might get launched with two engine options, petrol and a diesel. This new Ford Focus in India will features a maximum power of about 140 bhp @ 6000 rpm and a maximum torque of about 136 ft-lbs @ 4250 rpm.

This new Ford Focus in India, with a 5-Speed Manual Gear transmission is all set to give a top mileage of around 24 kmpl in the cities and around 33 kmpl in the highways. This new Ford Focus in India is expected to be launched by this August 2011 and might have a price tag of around Rs 11 lakhs (ex-showroom Mumbai).

Door Handle Issue Prompts Recall of 281,000 Ford F-150s

A recall has been put out for certain 2009-2010 model year Ford F-150s built from January 18, 2008, through November 30, 2009, because of a potential problem with the interior door handles. More specifically, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration [NHTSA] said that the interior door handle spring may fracture during normal usage resulting in insufficient spring force to return the handle to the fully stowed position.

"In the event of a side impact crash, the door handle spring can fail causing the door latch to open," the government safety agency said in a filling. Ford said that as of January 21, 2011, there are no reports of accidents or injuries related to this condition.

Owners of the affected F-150 models will be notified about the recall that is expected to on or about February 14, 2011.

The Upgradeable Car: A Software Influenced Future for the Auto Industry


As an automotive blogger that also works in the IT industry, I feel I have a somewhat unique perspective on in-car technology. Whereas a new car may have a three to five year buffer between upgrades and replacement models, for electronic devices such as mobile phones and computers it's more like six to eighteen months.

This brings up an interesting conundrum: what to do when the sat nav or Bluetooth devices in your car age more quickly than the car itself? Few people this side of Dhiaa Al-Essa can afford to replace their car every six months, so the answer - to automakers at least - is to do the same as software companies: roll out upgrades.

It could be something as simple as the dealership checking your oil and tire pressure remotely to recalibrating the transmission or updating the car's sat nav system. San Francisco based Cisco Systems has even constructed an experimental dashboard out of LCD panels that acts as a giant touch screen: driver's can drag and drop instruments, personalize the look and feel of said instruments and add new functions such as g-force meters.

The obsolescent of in-car technology is becoming more and more of a concern, especially in the light that market research firm R. L. Polk reveals that many of us are keeping our cars for up to 9 years. Advances in computing technology in our car's ECUs and other systems are also bound to cause headaches for automakers in the future.

As Dirk Schlesinger, a senior director in Cisco’s Internet business solutions group explains, "Complexity is killing the industry. We can’t change the silicon fast enough."

Software updates, a common enough occurrence when your car is taken in for a service in this day and age, may soon be rolled out automatically and via the internet or satellite, like they are for computer software.

In the words of Dave Evans, Cisco’s chief futurist: “The car is becoming the most sophisticated piece of computer equipment you own.”

That's as good as maybe, but with technology such as Ford AppLink giving its drivers access to Pandora or Twitter from behind the wheel or GM / Mercedes-Benz's OnStar and Mbrace systems allowing remote support for driver's and their vehicles, one thing is for sure: the future is closer than we think.

VIDEO: Ford Fusion Accident Leads to an Epic Landing


Now here's a scene you don't see every day. In fact, even if you tried to do it on purpose, we seriously doubt that you'd manage to pull it off no matter how hard and how many times you tried. The truly epic landing and vertical rest of this silver colored Ford Fusion (or at least it looks like a Ford') in the snowbank is the result of a multiple vehicle accident that took place on I-93 South bound just before Exit 3 in Windam in New Hampshire on Tuesday. Man Amasses Ridiculously Awesome Gulf Oil-Liveried Racing Car Collection

The collection comprises 14 of the most prominent Gulf Oil-liveried competition cars and has been created by Duncan Hamilton & Co.’s Chairman, Adrian Hamilton, for an unnamed but obviously passionate and extremely wealthy client.

All 14 cars were tracked down and acquired in just two years. The collection includes a variety of models ranging in age from the 1967 Mirage, which was the first Gulf-liveried car to run at Le Mans, to the 2010 Lamborghini Gallardo that competed in the GT2 Championship.

Commenting on the collection, Adrian Hamilton said: “My career has been punctuated by many remarkable cars – eg the one and only Mercedes-Benz 196 Grand Prix car in private hands, some nine Ferrari 250 GT0s, 20 GT40s, seven Porsche 917s and numerous Jaguar C and D-Types etc – but few projects have been as enjoyable and satisfying as this one. Like all racing enthusiasts I’ve grown up with the Gulf brand and it is a tremendous privilege to be able to build such a unique and lasting tribute to one of the greatest names in our sport. I am extremely indebted to my client for the opportunity.”

A total of 12 cars from the ROFGO Gulf Collection by Duncan Hamilton will get their first public outing for all to see at Retromobile, an annual show of classic road and racing cars, which takes place at Porte de Versailles in Paris, from February 2 to 6.

VIDEO: Oops...Ford F-150 Steps Over Ferrari 458 Italia


The owner of a brand new Ferrari 458 Italia with some 500 miles on the odometer in Brandon Florida received a quick lesson on the disadvantages of a low slung sports car in the land of pickup trucks and SUVs when a Ford F-150 ran over its hood. We don't know if the F-150 driver mistook Maranello's creation for a red speed bump or if the Ferrari owner questioned Ford's 'Built Tough' slogan, but something tells us this video is going to become a hit.
