Speed Ferries ban motorcycles

MCN have reported that Speed Ferries have imposed a ban on the carriage of motorcycles.

You can read the MCN article at http://www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/News/newsresults/mcn/2007/April/apr23-30/apr2607speedferriescancellationfiasco/

Speed Ferries operate a Seacat service between Dover and Boulogne and I infact used the service last year, because of its speed and low cost. So now we can't use this service to travel to Europe by motorcycle. Yet another blow for motorcycling in the UK!!!!

If you visit the front page (as at 29/04/07) of the Speed Ferries site it makes no mention of this, it's only when you try and book you see the message:-

"Technical difficulties with loading and discharge of motorcycles as well as serious problems securing proper and safe lashing is temporarily preventing SpeedFerries from carrying all kinds of motorcycles and bicycles. However already booked motorcycles will be carried until 30 April 2007."

I fear for motorcycling in the United Kingdom, with companies banning the use of bikes for work and now a ferry company banning their carriage, the relentless drive against the pursuit of motorcycling continues a pace!!!!!!!!!!!

Ride safe while you still can!

More companies ban motorcycles

MCN is reporting on its website today the further spread of companies banning the use of motorcycles during working hours.

These bans are being engendered by Axa Insurance who now have a condition in their commercial liability policies that motorcycle use be kept to a minimum.

The latest firm to ban motorbike use during working hours is BT and BNFL have imposed restrictions.
You can read MCN's report at
http://www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/News/newsresults/mcn/2007/April/apr23-30/apr2407btbansbikes/?&R=EPI-90770

So is this the thin end of the wedge, will we eventually face the situation in the UK that you will not be able to use a motorcycle for work purposes at all?

Employer bans the use of motorcycles!!!

Firm bans thousands of staff from riding bikes

MCN has today reported on its website that Johnson Controls Ltd who employ 136,000 employees world-wide, has advised staff that they must not use motorcycles as a form of transport on company business during office hours or face disciplinary action.

Is this the thin end of the wedge, if other companies jump on this band wagon, we could see the wholesale banning of motorcycle use by other leading blue chip companies?

However well intentioned this may appear, anything that banns the use of motorcycles is bad news for all us motorcyclists as it continues to reinforce outdated stereotypes about motorcycling.

Perhaps what they might have considered is offering advanced motorcycle training to employees who need to use motorcycles on company business.

Ride safe!
